Belarus Opposition Leader Seeks Bush Meeting

TBILISI, Georgia (UPI) -- Belarus opposition leader Anatoly Lebedko wants to meet President George W. Bush next month, Interfax news agency reported Friday.

Lebedko, a leading political opponent of authoritarian Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, said he planned to visit the Georgian capital Tbilisi on May 10 to try to meet with the U.S. president during his trip to the remote former Soviet republic in the Caucasus.

In an interview with Georgia's Rustavi-2 television, Lebedko said he had been invited to visit Tbilisi by Georgian parliamentary deputies.

"Even complete pessimists are saying a revolution is possible in Belarus, because it happened nearby, in the next yard," he said.

Lukashenko's opponents have raised their hopes following the democratic "Orange Revolution" that brought President Viktor Yushchenko to power in neighboring Ukraine in January.
