Milinkevich to visit European Parliament

Strasbourg, 08:03

The leader of the Belarus's opposition Alexander Milinkevich will kick off a two-day visit to the European Parliament, it was announced in Strasbourg.

Milinkevich's visit to EP comes three days ahead of the inauguration of Belarus's President Alexander Lukashenko, who was reelected at the controversial presidential poll held on 19 March.

While Lukashenko sinks deeper into international isolation, his main opponent at the disputed elections was invited to put his case in European capitals. Milinkevich had talks in Vienna on Monday with EU president Austria and following his visit to the European Parliament on April 5-6, he is due to attend a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on April 10.

The invitations are a stinging rebuke for Lukashenko, who dismisses Milinkevich as a troublemaker with no support at home.
