Belarus girl has new eyesight thanks to chernobyl group

By Nicola Rider

A LUCKY little girl from Belarus will this week return home with new eyesight - thanks to an Ashtead hospital.

Doctors at the Capio Hospital, corrected Ksusha Semchanka's eyesight during an operation on Friday March 24.

The 12-year-old suffered from a double squint which would have been corrected at birth on children from Britain.

But Ksusha is from the Gomel region of Belarus, one of the worst hit regions by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

She was bought over to England by the Chernobyl Children Life Line.

As featured in The Advertiser last week, the charity's Surrey branch is based in Ashtead and has dozens of families from Leatherhead, Dorking, Ashtead and Epsom which host children from the radiation hit area for a break two weeks every summer.

Just these few days in a cleaner environment can extend their life by two years.

Bob and Barbara Ferris from High Beeches, Banstead, looked after Ksusha while she had her operation.

Bob said: "She went to Ashtead on Friday and returned 'home' about 10pm.

Ksusha and her mother the opportunity to visit some tourist attractions.

Bob said: "We have been to the seaside. It was the first time her mother has seen the sea, coming from land-locked Belarus.

"She has also been able to visit some of the other families she met when she was here in the summer and on Wednesday her and her mother helped at a fundraising event at Ashtead Peace Hall."

Ksusha had a follow up appointment at the hospital on Saturday April 1 before flying back to Belarus with her mother the following day.

Bob said: "It has been a pleasure to have them stay with us and to be able to do something life-changing for a young girl who comes from a country in Europe that suffers from so many problems."
