EU lawmakers urge repeat elections in Belarus

Strasbourg, 13:09

European Parliament adopted a joint resolution condemning the failed presidential elections in Belarus and urging a repeat of the elections.

The EU lawmakers denounce the elections of 19 March 2006 as "not having fulfilled the required international standards of free, fair, accountable and transparent elections". Consequently, it will not recognize any legitimacy in President Lukashenko's leadership, and therefore calls on a repeat of the presidential elections in compliance with international democratic standards.

The resolution describes the Lukashenko's regime as "the last dictatorship in Europe".

The resolution recommends more support for the Belarus citizens through the creation of "visa facilitation regime" and to "fund additional educational exchange programmes for Belarus young people who have been expelled from their universities for political reasons". It also recommends a strengthening of the independent media "in order to help Belarus citizens obtain impartial and accurate information about their country and the world".
