Belarus Tells US To Reduce Embassy Staff From 17 To 5

MINSK, Belarus (AFP)--Belarus has asked the U.S. to further reduce its embassy staff, the ex-Soviet republic and the U.S. embassy said Thursday in an escalating diplomatic row over alleged human rights abuses.

The ministry said it had told the U.S. ambassador to "carry out the recommendation of the Belarussian Foreign Ministry on mutual cuts of the American diplomatic presence in Minsk and that of Belarus in Washington."

The U.S. embassy said separately it had been allowed to keep five people.
