Belarus wants more US embassy staff cut

Belarus has asked the United States to cut its embassy staff in Minsk to seven as the diplomatic rift between the two countries deepens.

"We consider it expedient to use the formula of one plus six, under which one ambassador and six diplomats will work at the Belarusian Embassy in the United States," said Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor Gaisyonok Wednesday.

"We expect the US to adhere to the principle of parity," he added.

The former Soviet republic's is at odds with the United States over sanctions and human rights.

Earlier in March Belarus recalled its ambassador for consultations and demanded the US cut the number of embassy staff in Belarus by half. The US met the demand.

Tensions between the two countries heightened after Washington imposed sanctions last November against Belarus' state-owned petrochemical company Belneftekhim and froze the assets of its US subsidiary.
