Belarus leader sees NATO expansion

MINSK, Belarus, April 3 (UPI) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed confidence Thursday that Ukraine and Georgia will be admitted to NATO.

It's "merely a matter of time," Lukashenko told a news conference in Minsk. "We need to think about strengthening our defense capacity, Our armed forces are all the Belarus-Russia Union State has in the west."

The United States is pushing for admission of the two former Soviet republics but NATO members meeting in Romania voted to postpone offering them the chance to join the alliance's Membership Action Plan.

However, NATO's secretary general later said Georgia and Ukraine eventually would be invited to join, Novosti said.
