Difficult spelling test for Poles in Belarus

Representatives of the Polish minority resident in Belarus are taking part in the third edition of the annual 'Spelling Test'.

It is held in three cities: the capital Minsk, Grodno and Brest.

However, on the eve of the event the organizers were informed by the respective local authorities that their reservations for the venues in which it was to take place had been cancelled. No official reasons have been given for the decisions.

Due to these last minute difficulties the organizers have asked Polish consular missions in Belarus to avail their premises for the 'Spelling Test'.

The problems with holding the test coincide with the implementation of the Polish Charter, a parliamentary drafted code of rights for Poles resident abroad, which has been sharply criticized by the Belarusian government and a source of Minsk's heated diplomatic argument with Polish authorities.
