Latvian and Belarus Foreign Ministers to discuss bilateral co-operation and EU - Belarus relations

On 22 April, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will meet with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Martynov, who will be in Latvia on a working visit.

During the meeting it is planned to discuss the actualities of current bilateral relations between Latvia and Belarus, emphasising co-operation in economic development which is an especially significant issue in the face of existing challenges in the current economic situation. The Belarus Foreign Minister will meet with representatives of the Latvian and Belarus Economic Co-operation Council and will also visit Latvian businesses which have a close working relationship with Businesses in Belarus.

One of the most important issues in the discussions between Messrs Riekstins and Martynov will be with regard to relations between the EU and Belarus. It is in Latvia's interests to create and develop co-operation with Belarus in all areas that affect Latvia's priorities within the framework of the Eastern Partnership: mobility, market regulation issues in harmony with the EU, the environment, energy, and education.

This will be the first visit to Latvia by a Foreign Minister from the Republic of Belarus after an interval of eleven years. The previous visit at Foreign Minister level took place in 1998, when the then Belarus Minister for Foreign Affairs was Ivan Antonovich.

Also scheduled as part of his visit to Latvia, Minister Martynov will meet with Latvia's President Valdis Zatlers and with Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis.
