Belarussians Must Work "Day, Night" To Combat Econ Woes President

MINSK, Belarus (AFP)--Belarussians should work "day and night" to help the country emerge from the economic crisis, President Alexander Lukashenko said on Thursday.

"Our people, myself included, are categorically against the elimination of jobs...but the people must understand that if we have taken this route, it means one must go to work and labor from morning to night," he said.

"Perhaps even day and night, without eating, without sleeping, everyone must work together to preserve our industry. If we save it, we will be the first to emerge from this crisis," Lukashenko said in an address to parliament.

Belarus has a Soviet-style command economy with a low official unemployment rate, but it has been shaken by the global financial crisis and sought billions of dollars in aid from its ally Russia and the International Monetary Fund.
