Belarus temporarily bans livestock imports from several countries onswine flu fears

MINSK. April 29 (Interfax) - Belarus has stepped up protective measures at livestock plants and introduced a temporary ban on imports of livestock products from Mexico, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, France and Israel, Agriculture and Food Ministry press secretary Darya Kozlovskaya told Interfax.

"Biological protection has been strengthened at all the country's livestock plants to keep out the swine flu virus," she said.

In addition, a temporary ban has been placed on imports of meat, meat products and feed for poultry and hogs from countries where swine flu has been registered or is suspected to have infected people, she said. If the virus spreads further, the list of countries from which livestock imports are banned will be expanded.

Epidemic control has also been stepped up at Belarusian airports, rail stations and on the border, she said. The country's top veterinary officials are to meet today to discuss the issue further, she said.
