Russia's S-400 secures Belarus airspace

A top Russian Air Force official says his country would equip Belarus with the most advanced weaponry, including S-400 air defense systems.

"We are still discussing the dates for delivery of the S-400 systems," first deputy Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Vadim Volkovitsky told Ria Novosti Thursday.

In February, Russia signed an airspace agreement with Belarus to create an integrated regional air defense network.

"I am certain that it will happen as part of our efforts to develop an integrated air defense network," said Volkovitsky.

The S-400 Triumf (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) is designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 km (250 miles), twice the range of the US MIM-104 Patriot.

The system also can destroy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, and is effective at ranges up to 3,500 km (2,200 miles) and speeds up to 4.8 km (3 miles) per second.
