Belarus: The UN General Assembly to hold a thematic debate on human trafficking

In conjunction with Bahrain, Egypt, Nicaragua and the Philippines, Belarus has initiated the second thematic debate of the UN General Assembly on human trafficking, due now to take place on 13 May in New York.

A major issue on the agenda will be Belarus' proposal supported by countries from all regions of the world to adopt, in the General Assembly, a Global Action Plan to combat human trafficking.

Under the UN General Assembly resolution adopted in December 2008, as per the Belarus' initiative, the UN Secretary General will issue a memo, setting out the way how the countries and international organizations view the Global Action Plan.

At a meeting on 8 April, the President of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, discussed with Belarus Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andrei Dapkiunas and heads of the Bahraini, Egyptian and Philippine Missions the arrangements for the thematic debate, taking note of Belarus active involvement in the development of human trafficking-related international co-operation.

This is the second thematic debate of the General Assembly on human trafficking organized on the initiative of Belarus. The first debate was held in June 2008. Moreover, following a Belarus' proposal, the UN Headquarters hosted, for the first time, an international conference on trafficking in women and girls in March 2007.
