Belarus station blast kills seven

Commuters rushed to hospital after explosion destroys ceiling at Oktyabrskaya station in Minsk

A blast at a metro station in Belarus's capital Minsk has killed at least seven people and injured dozens, state media have reported.

The explosion tore through the station in the heart of the Belarusian capital during evening rush hour, injuring at least 35 and sending clouds of smoke into the street.

Ambulances and rescue workers converged on the Oktyabrskaya station, located close to the presidential administration building.

Witnesses saw victims being carried on stretchers after the blast shortly before 6pm. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw heavily wounded people being carried out of the station.

One witness, Alexei Kiklevich, said at least part of the ceiling collapsed after the explosion.

There was no immediate indication of whether the blast was an accident or a terrorist attack.
