Message of support for Poles in Belarus

The leader of the right-wing League of Polish Families Roman Giertych has gone to Belarus to uplift the spirit of the Polish minority there and bring them a clear message of support from Poland. Giertych, who chairs the parliamentary committee for contacts with Poles resident abroad, went to Grodno to meet the newly elected leaders of the Union of Poles in Belarus.

The regime of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko declared the elections null and void and ordered the reinstatement of the union's former officials known for their loyalty.

The union represents some 400,000 Poles living in Belarus.
