Belarus opposition leader arrested again

Minsk - The Belarusian opposition leader Anatoli Lebedko was arrested again Wednesday evening in Minsk, along with others who formed a human chain to protest the disappearance of a long-missing government official, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

Lebedko, chairman of the United Civic Party, was arrested on his way to October Square to join the protest organized to commemorate the disappearance seven years ago of Yuri Zacharenko, the country's former interior minister who vanished without a trace along with the vice speaker of the Belarusian parliament and two others.

The police ordered the demonstration in October Square by 40 people to break up, then pursued and detained some of those leaving, Interfax reported.

Lebedko and other opposition figures were detained by police last month when they took advantage of a state-run Chernobyl memorial activity to organize a mass protest against the authoritarian government. At Wednesday's protests, the protestors also carried pictures of other supporters who were still in jail.

Belarus has seen repeated anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks, since authoritarian President Aleksander Lukashenko used Soviet tactics to win re-election in March.
