U.S. bars entry to Belarus officials

WASHINGTON, May 15 (UPI) -- The United States has barred entry to members of the Belarus government and others because of "fraud" in the recent election in that country.

A proclamation signed by U.S. President George Bush and released by the White House Monday said the United States was taking the action "to help the Belarusian people achieve their aspirations for democracy."

The proclamation also cited "the detention of peaceful protesters in Belarus" and "the persistent acts of corruption by Belarusian government officials ... and the continued failure of (Belarus President) Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Belarusian government officials and others to support the rule of law, human rights commitments and other principles of high priority to the United States."

The ban also applies to those who profit from business dealings arising out of fraudulent Belarusian practices, and to the spouses of businessmen and government officials.
