EU freezes assets of Belarus president

Brussels, May 18, IRNA

The European Union adopted Thursday a decision to freeze all funds and economic resources of 36 Belarussian officials including President Alexander Lukashenko for violating "international electoral standards and the crackdown on civil society and the democratic opposition."

"The common (EU) position also specifies that no funds or economic resources shall be made available, directly or indirectly, to or for the benefit of the persons concerned," said an EU statement.

Brussels accuses the Belarussian leadership of rigging the presidential election of March 19.

The freezing of assets is in addition to travel restrictions against President Lukashenko, members of the leadership and certain officials of Belarus imposed by the EU in April.
