Belarus: Transport potential

Belarus plans to cooperate with foreign transport companies to realize its transport potential, First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Nikolai Verkhovets has told a press conference today.

n his words, the international exhibition Transport and Logistics will serve this purpose. The exhibition will be held in Minsk from May 29 to June 1.

Nikolai Verkhovets stressed that Belarusian companies have to learn how to produce quality goods and how to deliver them to the customers with minimal losses. Thus, Belneftekhim transports potash fertilizers using several means of transport. "To the Baltic Sea the cargo is transported by the Belarusian Railways and then by foreign ships," he specified. Such a system should be used by other domestic companies.

The First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications also noted that the 2nd and 9th international transport corridors play an important role in the transport network of Belarus. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan want the 2nd transport corridor be extended to their territories. "However this process requires huge financial expenses. Today Belarus and the abovementioned countries consider this issue," he said.

Nikolai Verkhovets informed that this year transport services are set to increase by 15% as against 2006. "We have to reach this target. For this purpose we have to maximally use the transport potential in Belarus," he said.
