Belarussian opposition figure refuses to political council of joint democrats

MINSK. May 27 (Interfax-West) - Belarussian opposition figure and former presidential candidate Alexander Milinkevich has decided against running for membership in the 44-member political council of united democratic forces.

He disagreed with the decision of the congress of democratic forces not to nominate a single Belarussian opposition leader.

The congress that ended Sunday evening adopted a strategy of action for the nearest future and elected the political council that consists of representatives of several political parties and organizations.

The congress adopted several documents such as an economic platform of democratic forces aimed at market reforms, social security and state support for major companies.

It also approved what it described the smaller constitute - a code of laws according to which the opposition thinks Belarus will live during the transitional period after its victory.

The congress adopted messages to the nation and to the world public and resolutions on stopping political harassment, on preserving social rights, on respecting the memory of victims of Stalinist purges and on stopping the repression of business in Belarus. ml
