Bangladesh, Belarus sign trade agreement

MINSK, Belarus, May 30 (BSS): Bangladesh and Belarus have signed an agreement on trade and economic cooperation.

Bangladesh Ambassador in Russia M Amir Hussain Sikder, who is concurrently accredited in Belarus, and Belarus Deputy Foreign Minister Victor Anatolievich Gaisenok signed the agreement in the Belorussian capital Minsk on behalf of their respective governments Tuesday.

Earlier, the Belorussian deputy foreign minister welcomed the Bangladesh ambassador in Minsk.

Mentioning the excellent bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Belarus, he expressed the hope that the bond of friendly ties would be further strengthened.

He said Belarus valued the friendly relations and economic cooperation with Bangladesh and added the existing excellent cooperation could be further strengthened through increased contacts at different levels.

The Belorussian minister also expressed the hope that the two countries would be benefited by the already concluded trade agreement through expansion of trade and economic cooperation.

During the meeting, Gaisenok informed that a Belorussian delegation comprising business people would soon visit Bangladesh for annual consultations to be held in Dhaka.

He said the forthcoming meeting in Dhaka would provide scope for the two countries to assess and review the existing bilateral cooperation.

Reciprocating the sentiments, the Bangladesh ambassador mentioned that the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Belarus are based on strong foundations and historical links.

He recalled the vital role and cooperation that Belarus, as a part of the then USSR, had extended to Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971.

The ambassador said Bangladesh would welcome Belarus' support, assistance and cooperation in the agriculture, energy and power generation, and other areas.
