Velcom introduces pilot 3G network in Mogilev

Belarusian mobile operator Mobile Digital Communications, which markets services under the brand names Velcom and Privet, has launched a pilot 3G network in Mogilev based on W-CDMA equipment supplied by Siemens. The new platform, launched at the beginning of this month, is free of charge to subscribers until 30 July. Velcom says it estimates that around 3,000 customers will test the service in that period.

According to online news portal e-Belarus.org, a committee set up by the regulator, the State Committee on Radio Frequencies, will soon announce its plans for the allocation of frequencies for 3G services, ahead of the possible award of licences by the end of summer 2007.
