Belarus to put emphasis on coal-fuelled power plants again

MINSK, May 15 (Itar-Tass) -- Belarus deems it necessary to expand electricity production at coal-fuelled power plants, First Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko said on Tuesday.

"We have arrived at the conclusion we should develop coal-fuelled electricity production at a qualitatively new level, because in many respects it is better than gas-fuelled power plants," he said.

A decision was made to launch two pilot projects. One 600-megawatt power plant will be built in the Grodno Region to go operational in 2012, and another, in Brest.

"Brest is pretty close to the Ukrainian border, so the opportunity of using Ukrainian coal readily offers itself and we cannot but consider it," Semashko said.
