US imposes economic sanctions on 3 more Belarussian companies

WASHINGTON, May 15 (Itar-Tass) - U.S. Administration has imposed economic sanctions on another three Belarussian companies - the producer of paints and coatings Lakokraska, the manufacturer of glass fiber Steklovolokno and the Belarussian Oil Trading House

According to the Department of the Treasury, the financial assets of those companies are subject to freezing, should any such assets be found in the U.S.

The economic sanctions mean that any transactions with the three companies are forbidden for U.S.-based corporations and individuals.

Relations between the U.S. and Belarus have deteriorated to a critical point of late, as both countries have called off their ambassadors for consultations and reduced the personnel of their embassies to the minimum.

Last year, the U.S. Administrations subjected to sanctions the Belarussian petrochemical corporation Belneftekhim. In March 2008, the scope of sanctions against it was broadened.

Washington motivates its actions by saying the Belarussian authorities infringe on human rights and the country has political prisoners.
