Putin Named Prime Minister Of Russia-Belarus Alliance

(RTTNews) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday that he has named Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as the Prime Minister of the Russia-Belarus alliance.

The meaning of Lukashenko's statement was not immediately clear, but experts feel that the move could hint at a possible merger between the two former Soviet countries.

Meanwhile the Belarusian news agency BelTA reported the executive secretary of the alliance as saying that the move came after consultations between Lukashenko the Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev.

Earlier, it was widely expected that Putin would take over as the president of a unified state of Russia and Belarus after he stepped down as the Russian president earlier in the month.

The 1996 agreement reached between Russia and Belarus calls for close political, economic and military ties between the two countries, but subsequent efforts for a full merger had failed.
