EU Presidency Protests Arrest of Belarus Entrepreneurs

Ljubljana, 1 May (STA) - The Slovenian EU presidency has condemned the severe sentencing of two Belarus entrepreneurs, who were apprehended for taking part in entrepreneurs' demonstrations on 10 and 21 January.

The presidency has written in a press release that taking part in protests is an "inalienable democratic right". It believes the trials against the two, who were sentenced on 22 and 23 April, respectively, "have been politically motivated and that the sentences passed on them seem disproportionate to the charges".

It also urged Belarus to re-examine the sentences and to immediately release the two imprisoned entrepreneurs.

The presidency furthermore expressed great concern over the increased harassment of human rights defenders and independent media representatives in the East European country and reminded Belarus of its commitment to respect the rights of human rights defenders and create an environment where they may work without constraints.
