The official Belarus Telgraph Agency (BelTA) reported today that the European Union will no longer hold Belarus "hostage" to threats of closings dialogues over the issue of recognition for Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The news came immediately after the announcement that a special delegation of top administrative and diplomatic officials from Belarus had arrived in Abkhazia to discuss increasing cooperation between the two countries, and inevitably the issue of formal diplomatic recognition.
The EU diplomat in Minsk told reporters in a special press-conference that "The issue on recognizing or not recognizing the two Caucasian republics is not part of our dialogue with Belarus. The Belarusian authorities and society should decide upon this issue by themselves."
