Belarusian defence minister visits Vietnam

A Belarusian military delegation led by the country's Minister of Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Leonid Semenovich Maltsev, is paying an official visit to Vietnam beginning on May 26.

The visit was made at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart, General Phung Quang Thanh and the welcoming ceremony was held at the Vietnamese Defence Ministry's headquarters on May 27.

On receiving the Belarusian official, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet asserted that the Vietnamese State and people would make every effort to boost friendship and multi-faceted co-operation between the two countries, especially in the fields of national defence and military strategy.

President Nguyen Minh Triet thanked the Belarusian State and people for their assistance during Vietnam's past struggles for independence and during its current national construction process.

He emphasised that Vietnam wanted to strengthen its co-operation with Belarus in numerous fields, including defence.

Senior Lieutenant General Maltsev thanked the Vietnamese State and Ministry of National Defence for their invitation and handed over a report of his trip to the Vietnamese Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh.

He praised the achievements that Belarus and Vietnam had made in defence and military sciences.

He also expressed his belief that the signed agreements on co-operation between the two ministries during his visit would help to develop the two countries' relationship.

During their talks earlier the same day, General Phung Quang Thanh praised the Belarusian military delegation's contribution to the mutual understanding and traditional friendship shown between the two countries' armies and peoples.

For his part, Senior Lieutenant General Maltsev expressed pleasure at Vietnam's sustainable socio-economic development. He said he hoped that his visit will contribute to promoting further co-operation between the armed forces of both countries by exchanging delegations and military training./.
