AFTER seven decades as a nation in the USSR, landlocked Belarus became independent in 1991.

Last year, then US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described Belarus and its President Aleksandr Lukashenko, as "the last remaining true dictatorship in the heart of Europe".

However, it has taken huge strides to becoming more free.

It has borders with Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine.

Belarus has a population of more than 10 million and celebrates its Independence Day on July 3, marking the date in 1944 that the capital Minsk was liberated from German troops.
