Belarus Sentences Two Men To Death For Triple Murder

Belarus sentenced two men to death Friday after they were found guilty of killing three people, of kidnapping a child and of attacking a taxi driver and committing arson, all in October last year.

A court in the western town of Grodno near the Polish border sentenced the two men to be shot, state news agency BelTA reported, citing a court official. The sentences can be appealed.

Belarus has previously drawn criticism from Europe over its death penalty, since it is the only European country to still execute people.

In March, when Belarus put to death two convicts, the European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton called for an immediate moratorium on capital punishment in the country.
