Belarusian police break up gay pride parade

Minsk - Police in Belarus on Saturday broke up a gay and lesbian pride parade and arrested around a dozen activists, the Belapan news agency reported.

The parade, with around 30 participants chanting and carrying a 12-metre long rainbow flag, had moved around 300 metres through the capital Minsk, according to the report.

The city council had refused permission for the event, citing the ban on mass gatherings. Human rights organization Amnesty International criticized the decision.
