Belarus opposition nominate 2011 presidential election candidate

The FINANCIAL -- MINSK. The opposition United Civil Party of Belarus nominated economist Yaroslav Romanchuk as its candidate for the country's 2011 presidential elections, senior party member Alexander Dobrovolsky said on May 31, according to RIA Novosti.

Party chairman Anatoly Lebedko will also participate in the elections and be made prime minister if Romanchuk wins, Dobrovolsky said.

He said this is in line with the United Civil Party's policy of putting forward only one candidate from the United Democratic Forces, a coalition of parties that makes up the country's opposition group.

"We did the same in the 2001 and 2006 presidential elections. Now, the situation with the United Democratic Forces is more complicated, but we will try to promote just one candidate," he said.

Currently, around 10 people have put themselves forward as candidates for the elections, which will be held on February 7, 2011.
