Belarus receives request from Kyrgyz authorities to extradite ousted president

Belarus' Prosecutor General's Office has received a request from the Kyrgyz authorities to extradite ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, an official with the Prosecutor General's Office told RIA Novosti news agency Tuesday.

However Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko said that the request will be rejected. "No one has contacted me officially. I would like to say that such contacts will be uselss. The Kyrgyz President is under protection of the Belarus state and the President," Lukashenko said.

The Kyrgyz opposition took power in the former Soviet republic in early April after anti-government protests in several cities turned violent, particularly in the capital, Bishkek. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled to neighboring Kazakhstan and then to the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
