Outlawed Belarusian university to resume operations in Lithuania this year
Vilnius, 9 June: The European Humanities University (EHU), which was based in Minsk and was closed down by the Belarusian authorities in July 2004, is expected to resume operations in Vilnius in September.
The plans were unveiled on Thursday [9 June] at a conference inaugurating EHU's reopening in the Lithuanian capital.
The project will be financed by NGOs, private foundations, European educational institutions, the governments of the European Union's member nations and the United States.
Several schools in the EU and the USA have expressed their intention to run joint academic programmes with EHU in Vilnius.
EHU will offer Belarusian students educational programmes of various levels, including distance education bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programmes, Uladzimir Dunayew, a former vice-rector of EHU who is one of the directors of the EHU International project, told Belapan on the sidelines of the conference.
While speaking at the conference, representatives of several Lithuanian academic institutions, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and Dutch, German, Luxembourg and US diplomats condemned the Belarusian authorities' move to get rid of EHU and promised to assist it with its operations in Vilnius.

Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka said this past autumn that the government had closed EHU because it had made its students pro-Western and had refused to follow the government's ideology and education policies.
He accused the institution of failing to "train students like other schools did," and making "our Belarusian kids" victim to "adults' political games".
