Russian Duma speaker dismisses prospect of revolution in Belarus

Homel, 24 June: In his second public sign of support for Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka's government in two days, the speaker of Russian State Duma, Boris Gryzlov, said that he does not see any preconditions for a "coloured revolution" in Belarus.

While opening a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia in Homel on 24 June, Boris Gryzlov said: "We know that those wishing to organize a "coloured revolution" of sorts in Belarus have been increasingly active recently."

The Russian politician stressed that the alleged attempts at "exporting democracy" to Belarus mean disrespect for the opinion of the Belarusian people and run counter to international law.

"I see no grounds that could help materialize these destructive plans in Belarus, but we cannot but respond to them. The more so, as we all have seen what foam is left behind by the wave of 'coloured revolutions'," the parliamentary speaker said.

While talking to reporters upon his arrival in the Belarusian city on 23 June, Gryzlov promised that Russia would ward off attacks by the Council of Europe and the human rights body's Parliamentary Assembly on Belarus.
