Belarus to develop telecommunications sector

by Carla Moore

Belarus will have 6 million mobile phone users by 2010, reports e-Belarus.org.

The figure was taken from the programme of Social and Economical development of Belarus for 2006-2010. The programme includes suggestions for the development of the telecommunications sector, including improving internet services and encouraging e-commerce. The programme was adopted on 9 June 2006.

The programme predicts an increase in the number of mobile phone users in Belarus. Currently there are 4.8 million mobile phone subscribers, but the government would like to see that number increase 1.5 times by 2010 to reach a total of 6 million mobile phone users.

The programme also includes plans to increase fixed-line services. According to a survey taken in 2005, the telephone density in Belarus was 35 for every 100 people. The programme aims to achieve a density of 38 fixed phone lines per 100 people by 2010.
