U.S. Blocks Assets of Belarus President

The United States froze on Monday the assets of Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko as well as other government officials.

Any assets belonging to Lukashenko found in the United States must be blocked and Americans are forbidden from doing business with him, the U.S. Treasury Department said.

Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, won a third term in March 19 elections. Washington has claimed Lukashenko's victory resulted from election fraud and human rights abuses.

The United States also joined European nations in late March in imposing sanctions on Belarus in retaliation for a crackdown on political protesters.
