Minsk to Host Meeting of Cpcw East European Group

MINSK. May 31 (Interfax-AVN) - A regional meeting of member states of the East European group of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CPCW) is to take place in Minsk on June 6-8, Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Popov told a briefing in Minsk on Thursday.

"The event is being organized by the Foreign Ministry of Belarus and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. It is dedicated to the implementation of CPCW," he said.

The meeting is expected to involve representatives of more than 20 CPCW signatories, the spokesman said.

Popov said he is convinced that the meeting, which will also mark the tenth anniversary of the convention's enactment, "will help deepen cooperation between countries in implementing the convention."

The text of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction was adopted at a disarmament conference in Geneva on September 3, 1992. The document was opened for signing in Paris on January 13, 1993 and came into force on April 29, 1997.

It has been signed by 182 countries.
