U.S. Extended Sanctions Against Lukashenko for Another Year

The United States has extended sanctions against Belarus president and a number of top-ranked officials of that country. U.S. President George Bush sealed the ruling blocking bank accounts and assets of Belarus officials in the United States for another year, the AP reported.

The accounts/assets of Belarus officials in the United States were frozen in 2006 due to the crackdown on democracy and democratic institutions there and violation of human rights through political repressions.

The sanctions actually isolated Belarus from the United States, as under the order of Treasury Department they banned the U.S. residents from making deals with bureaucrats of Belarus.

The European Union also imposed sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko and 30 bureaucrats of Belarus once Lukashenko became president for the third time via the elections that the West evaluated as clearly rigged.
