Online news sites protest new media laws in Belarus

More than 12 independent Belarusian Internet news Web sites have protested the closure of their sites by the government, some placing black banners on their home pages for one hour.

The protests follow parliament's new media laws, which require Internet sites to register with the government and obey state censorship regulations.

Prior to the new media regulations, independent outlets used the Internet to develop news sites, avoiding restrictions placed on radio, television and print media.
