U.S. educational center in Belarus denied renewal of registration - U.S.diplomat

MINSK. June 4 (Interfax) - The decision by Belarus not to renew registration for the U.S. Educational and Research Center in Belarus was the reason why the institution had to shut down its operations, U.S. charge d'affaires in Belarus Jonathan Moore told Interfax on Wednesday. The center had a registration and was open, before the authorities asked for new documents to be submitted for re-registration. The Center did not receive a reply thereafter, Moore said.

The Educational center was not a part of the U.S. embassy and focused on education, the official said.

It was reported earlier that the U.S. Educational and Research Center in Belarus had been closed since May 28, 2008.

The U.S. Educational and Research center offered student exchange programs for post-graduates and holders of university degrees. In particular, Belarusians were able to pursue their studies at European universities and receive bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees or to conduct research in the humanities and social sciences, a message on the Center's web site indicates.
