Belarus won't limit number of international election observers - CEC

MINSK. June 5 (Interfax) - Minsk is ready to welcome any number of international election observers during the parliamentary election campaign this fall, Belarusian Central Elections Commission Chairperson Lidia Yermoshina told Interfax on Thursday.

"We think that any limits would play into the hands of destructive forces, which are trying to thwart relations between Belarus and European agencies. Thus, we will do our best to ensure harmony and mutual satisfaction of the observing and observed parties," she said.

An OSCE technical mission will visit Belarus next week to discuss the prospective international observation of the election, Yermoshina said. "Nothing that could disturb the local and international public is happening in this country. We have absolute stability, which corresponds to the quiet and democratic nature of the election campaign," she said.

"We value the opinion of the European Union and other European agencies and we would like to develop fruitful cooperation," Yermoshina said in comments on recent statements by certain EU officials who linked the election outcome to the future of Belarus-EU relations.

"We hold the election for the sake of our country. The election will reflect the will of Belarusian voters whether foreign countries like it or not," she said.
