Zeltser Has Been Taking Seized Tablets for 15 Years - Lawyer

MINSK. June 10 (Interfax) - Dmitry Goryachko, defense lawyer for U.S. citizen Emanuel Zeltser, currently detained in Belarus, has received documents from the United States, which deal with the medicines seized from his client as he was detained in Minsk.

"Documents arrived from the U.S. following my inquiry, signed by my client's doctor, which say that the medicines seized in Minsk had been prescribed to Zeltser and that he had been taking them for a long time," Goryachko told Interfax on Tuesday.

"The documents also indicate that Zeltser has been taking the medicines, prescribed by his doctor and seized in Belarus, for more than 15 years." They also say that if Zeltser stops taking them the consequences will be irreversible for his health, the lawyer said.

"A copy of these documents has been handed to the investigator," Goryachko said.

"No charges of illicit drug sale and contraband have been officially brought against Zeltser," he said.

"We are waiting for a final statement by experts. The tablets seized from Zeltser will be examined by chemistry experts," he added.

Interfax earlier reported, citing the Belarusian State Security Committee spokesman Valery Nadtachayev, that a criminal case was opened against Zeltser last week on charges of drug contraband and illicit trade in drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors.
