The Ukrinterenerho public enterprise for external economic activity agreed with Belenergo (Belarus) on exports of Ukrainian electric power from June until the end of 2009.

Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yurii Prodan announced this to the press.

In his words, monthly volume of supplies will reach 100 million kilowatt-hours, supplies power 200 Megawatts per month.

According to the Cabinet of Ministers' order No.574 issued on May 27, by which the government approved the Fuel and Energy Ministry's proposition to export electricity to Belarus, Ukrinterenerho and Belenergo signed corresponding contract on May 14.

The Cabinet was notified, the public enterprise Enerhorynok will ensure signing of relevant agreements for purchase-and-sale of electric energy at the wholesale market on conditions of this contract.

Speaking at a news briefing in Chernihiv on June 2, Belarusian First Vice Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko said the government of Belarus has approved of the parameters of the contract. However, the approval from President Alexander Lukashenko is needed.

Semashko said the approval from President Lukashenko can come to the government any day now. If the approval from the president comes, only technical questions will remain, he said.

Semashko further said Ukraine would export nearly 750 million kilowatt-hours by the end of 2009.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine in January proposed Belarus importing 3 billion kilowatt-hours of Ukrainian electricity in 2009.

Late in June 2007, the Ukrinterenerho public enterprise for external economic activity (Ukrainian export/import monopoly) suspended exports of electricity to Belarus.

The exports were suspended as the Ukrainian National Electricity Regulation Commission ordered the company purchasing electricity for exports at prices not lower than those on the Ukrainian Wholesale Electricity Market.

In 2008, Ukraine trimmed electricity exports by 14.5% or by 1.332 billion kilowatt-hours over 2007, to 7.868 million kilowatt-hours.
