Barbie's lover held in Belarus

TLALANE TSHETLO SAPA

JOHANNESBURG - Alleged paedophile advocate Dirk Prinsloo, lover of fellow advocate Cezanne "Barbie" Vissser who is also currently facing sex charges, was arrested in Belarus in Eastern Europe on Friday after police said he tried to rob a bank.

Prinsloo jumped bail more than three years ago while standing trial with Visser, his ex-fiancee.

"We were told by Interpol that Prinsloo was arrested at 5.30pm on Friday following an attempted bank robbery in Belarus," said Police spokesman Director Sally de Beer.

Prinsloo and two other men allegedly attempted to rob a bank on Wednesday armed with a pistol and a knife.

"The staff managed to overpower two of the suspects and Prinsloo ran away. He was tracked down and arrested two days later," said De Beer

De Beer said South Africa would approach Belarus to have Prinsloo extradited after the criminal process there had run its course.

"Obviously he will be tried in Belarus for the attempted robbery but he can be extradited back to South Africa."

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development yesterday welcomed Prinsloo's arrest.

The department's spokesman Tlali Tlali said as central authority on extradition matters, the Director-General in the Department Advocate Menzi Simelane would initiate extradition procedures after consulting with the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority.

Once all compliance aspects in terms of the treaty between South Africa and Belarus are satisfied, Pretoria would make the contact with Minsk in order to facilitate Prinsloo's extradition to stand trial on crimes he is alleged to have committed in South Africa.
