Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan to start WTO talks after mid-2011

LECCE, Italy, Jun 15 (Prime-Tass) -- Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan are expected to start talks on their accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a single customs union after mid-2011, Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin told reporters on June 13 during a meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) finance ministers.

Creation of the customs union between Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan will be competed in mid-2011, Kudrin said, adding that the WTO accession talks would begin after this date.

"No mechanism for the three states' talks with the WTO has been determined yet," Kudrin said.

He expressed certainty that 90% of Russia's achievements during its previous WTO talks would be included in a new WTO agreement.

Russia had been in talks to join the WTO as a single state since 1993, but negotiations were delayed by various issues over the past few years. Last week, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would join the WTO as part of the customs union with Belarus and Kazakhstan.
