Suspected S.African paedophile arrested in Belarus

A South African man wanted for sex crimes against children has been arrested in the Belarus capital Minsk, two days after he tried to rob a bank there, Interpol said Tuesday.

George "Dirk" Prinsloo has been on the run since 2006 from South Africa where he is wanted on charges of rape, indecent assault, fraud and possession of images showing the sexual abuse of children.

The 39-year-old fugitive had sent letters to the media boasting that he would never be caught.

A former advocate from Pretoria, Prinsloo was arrested on Friday by police in Belarus who were hunting for three men who had staged an attempted bank robbery two days earlier.

Following verifications, Belarus police found out that the suspect was on Interpol's wanted list and sent his fingerprints to the organisation's offices to confirm his identity.

Prinsloo faces a charge of robbery in Belarus and is expected to be extradited to South Africa for trial there.
