Belarus: Transcript of comments by Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov following a meeting of the Belarus-Germany Council on Economic Cooperation on 16 June 2009

Sergei Martynov: Today, we are having a meeting of the Belarus-Germany Council of Economic Cooperation. Its work was resumed after a 13 years' break. That reflects first of all the improving atmosphere in relationships between Belarus and Germany, Belarus and the European Union, and also an increasing interest among businesses of both countries.

During today's meeting, we discussed practically all major elements of our trade and economic relations - from banking co-operation to customs and tax regulations, energy, human resources, and standardisation. We agreed to co-operate in these areas as a whole and in concrete elements. We hope that our joint work to encourage trade, economic and investment co-operation between our countries will continue.

Interfax-Zapad: In light of the milk strain in the relations between Russia and Belarus, what is the way out that you see in this situation?

Sergei Martynov: We see the way out in what we said jointly with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov and in what both negotiating sides are saying. We need a normal, constructive and professional co-operation in this area. There should not be non-market competition from both sides. This situation should be resolved, finished and left behind as fast as possible.
