Belarus tightens control over cargo traffic on border with Russia

MINSK, June 17 (Itar-Tass) - Belarus has tightened the customs controls over cargo traffic on the border with Russia, spokesman for the Belarussian State Customs Committee Vladimir Pekhterev told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. He also noted that Belarus had taken the measure under the presidential instructions.

People, who are crossing the Belarussian-Russian border, also confirmed this information. According to eyewitnesses, early in the morning on Wednesday a trailer with the announcement reading that this is a customs house of the Vitebsk customs service that accepts notifications on the imports of goods arrived at a border-crossing station on the Minsk-Moscow highway. About ten Belarussian customs officers and a unit of road policemen arrived at the foresaid border checkpoint.

On Tuesday evening, chief of the Belarussian State Customs Committee Alexander Shpilevsky noted that the republic would introduce at 09.00 local time (10.00 Moscow time) on Wednesday tough customs controls over cargo traffic on the Russian-Belarussian major highways.
