Belarus looks to Turkmens as ties with Russia sour

(AP) - ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan - Belarus's president is in gas-rich Turkmenistan to find new markets for his country's exports after diplomatic ties with Russia soured.

Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday that sales of agricultural or industrial goods to Turkmenistan will help Belarus endure the drop in exports caused by the global economic crisis.

His visit to the Central Asian nation comes amid a deterioration in Belarusian relations with Russia.

Moscow slapped a ban on Belarusian milk products and raised prices for its energy supplies, prompting angry rhetoric from both countries. On Wednesday, Russia lifted the dairy ban.

Lukashenko is expected Friday to visit eastern Turkmenistan, where a Belarusian company is building a $1 billion potash mining and refining facility.
